Disneyland: August 5, 1967
As part of the “New Tomorrowland” renovations of 1967, Adventure Thru Inner Space opens in Tomorrowland in the space once used for the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Exhibit. Using an all-new transportation system, the Omnimover – a continuously moving chain of “Atomobiles” which are able to swivel and turn at pre-determined locations throughout the attraction, guests are transported through a microscope where they are shrunken down and sent off to explore the inside of an atom. (The Omnimover system will go on to be featured as “DoomBuggies” in the Haunted Mansion, and later be utilized in attractions such as Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in the Magic Kingdom or Buzz Lightyear’s AstroBlasters at Disneyland, and the under construction Little Mermaid attraction coming to Disney’s California Adventure in 2011). The attraction features the voice of Paul Frees as the narrator and an all-new theme song “Miracles from Molecules” written by the Sherman Brothers. (The attraction will close 19 years later, and the space will become the home of Star Tours, opening in 1987).
