On the New Year’s Eve edition of the DAD Show, Darcy McKillop talks about his Boston to Bermuda cruise on the Norwegian Dawn. Along the way, we talk about spending time in Boston before the cruise (complete with a DISDad meetup) and the somewhat unusual point-to-point cruise from Boston to Bermuda. If you’re interested in sailing with Norwegian Cruise Lines, don’t miss Darcy’s advice about dealing with some recent changes to Norwegian’s “Freestyle Dining” system.

But wait, there’s more! More DISDads beer (and booze) news. We’ve decided to add a new event to the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend DISDads Convention agenda for 2015. At 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, January 9, we’ll be meeting up at the Lounge at The Wave … of American Flavors next to the check-in desk at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. From there, we will visit three more bars along the Resort Loop Monorail line – Tambu Lounge at the Polynesian Village Resort, Mizner’s Lounge at the Grand Floridian, and we’ll wrap up at the Top of the World Lounge at Bay Lake Tower. I reached out to our DISDads beer guru, David Juart, for some planning assistance:
The inaugural DISDads Club Convention Bar Crawl is merely days away, and I’m getting thirsty. Unfortunately I’ll be joining you all from afar, but I’ll be there in spirit. I have put together three touring options for differing tastes or multiple laps (Multiple laps to be completed at your own risk. Not recommended).
While partaking, remember a few things:
- This is a Marathon, not a sprint.
- Cleanse your palate between drinks (pretzels, crackers, or water work well)
- Speaking of, be sure to drink your
Ovaltine water. Hydrate! Four to six oz. of water per drink!
- Eat something – I recommend bacon. Or ‘Ohana shrimp.
Now without further ado, it’s time to pick your poison:
The Standard – offering a variety of beer flavors, accessible to those who may be new to craft beer
The Wave – Orlando Brewing Company Pale Ale (Or substitute the Cigar City Brewing Co.’s Jai Alai IPA. I prefer the Jai Alai, but Orlando Brewing’s organic beers are something of a signature offering from The Wave).
Tambu Lounge – Kona Brewing Company Koko Brown Ale
Mizner’s Lounge – Sam Adams (or whatever Sam Adams Seasonal they have available – Mizner’s has a rather disappointing beer selection).
Top of the World Lounge – Unibroue La Fin du Monde
The “Justin West” (a/k/a Go Big or Go Home) – Big, strong, complex flavors (and generally higher alcohol contents)
The Wave – Napa Smith Hopageddon Imperial IPA
Tambu Lounge – Boulevard Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale
Mizner’s Lounge – Terrapin Hopsecutioner
Top of the World Lounge – St Bernardus Abt 12
The Booze Crawl – for those who prefer spirits to beer (Aaron’s list)
The Wave – Forever Young (Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Cedilla Acai Liqueur, muddled blueberries, agave nectar, and fresh lemon juice) – sounds like a refreshing way to start the crawl.
Tambu Lounge – Lapu Lapu (Myers’s Original Dark Rum and tropical fruit juices served in a fresh pineapple, topped with Bacardi 151 Rum) – It’s a classic.
Mizner’s Lounge – Lagavulin, 16-year-old, neat. This is where Mizner’s really shines. Mizner’s has lots of excellent high-end spirits available – it just depends on what you want to spend. 16-year-old Lagavulin at $17/pour is pretty reasonable for bar prices. If you’re in the mood to really splurge, consider the $37 Johnnie Walker Blue or $95 25-year-old from The Macallan.
Top of the World Lounge – Rye Manhattan (Bulleit Rye, small batch American whiskey, Carpano Antica sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters, garnished with Luxardo Gourmet Maraschino Cherries). Maybe it’s just my own bias against too much sweet stuff with my booze, but it’s hard to pass up a classic American cocktail made with excellent ingredients to top off the night at the Top of the World.
We hope you can join us – this should be a fun night! We’re planning on doing some remote recording, in hopes that we can build a podcast episode out of the recordings later.
DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE. IF YOU YOU ARE STAYING SOMEWHERE OFF OF THE MONORAIL LINE, PLEASE USE A NON-DRINKING DESIGNATED DRIVER, DISNEY TRANSPORTATION, OR A TAXI TO GET BACK SAFELY. NEITHER THE AUTHORS OF THIS POST, NOR THE DISDADS AS A GROUP, ENDORSE UNSAFE DRINKING. PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
We’re scheduled to record the fourth installment of our Beercast series a week from today, on Saturday, January 3 at 9:00 p.m. Central Time. While it will be another week or so before that recording is released as a podcast, we thought it might be fun to try recording a Beercast live. So if any of your are interested in joining in the fun, we’ll be broadcasting Beercast 4 on DISDads Radio. If you’d like to drink along with us, the list of beers for Beercast 4 is:
- Breckenridge Vanilla Porter
- Lagunitas IPA
- Magic Hat #9
All three of those beers should be pretty readily available in most markets. If you join us live, we’ll invite you to share your opinions as we sample. NOTE: As you can imagine, the atmosphere during a Beercast recording is a bit . . . loose. While the final edited version of the show in the podcast feed will be edited to merit our “Clean” rating, the live feed may not be appropriate for all ages.
