Panel: Sean McCumber, Patrick Mines, Nathan Trent

In Episode 228, we broadcast live a discussion about the many changes coming to Walt Disney World’s Disney’s Hollywood Studio. We talked about the expected expansion to the Pixar Place area, as well as our ideas for what would be needed to do justice to a Star Wars Land at the park. In the middle of the show, Jay Gilbert called in live from Storybook Circus during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party in the Magic Kingdom (where he also happened upon the Dole Whips pictured here).

What do you think about the possibilities for an expanded Pixar Place? What needs to be included in Star Wars Land to do justice to the franchise? Epcot International Food & Wine Festival – Fantasy Beer Flight Draft

Heh heh. Fantasy Beer Flight Draft. You see what I did there? So, there’s one thing you should know about me before you read this – I’m a nerd. My nerdom, though, extends well beyond the obvious Disney nerdness. I’m nerdy about beer (seriously, tasting notes?). I’m nerdy about sports (mostly football, but that’s another story for another day). And if general football nerdness wasn’t enough, I’m also a Fantasy football nerd. So now I’m doing my best Voltron impression and combining all of my mechanical cats, er, nerdy hobbies into one. I bring to you, this year’s Ultimate Epcot International Food and Wine Festival Fantasy Beer Flight Draft!

I constructed this list as I would any Fantasy line up – a couple of studs, some up and comers, a little filler and a flyer or two with potential to round things out. I tried not to repeat style, though a couple of them are close. I also tried not to just post the Craft Beer, Brewer’s Collection, and Hops and Barley tap lists. That would have been too easy. Yes, I draw heavily from them, but hey, they’re the Broncos, Bears, and Eagles of the Food and Wine world. And one last aside: this list in no way an all-inclusive list of beers I would drink while at F&W. But I wanted it to include an array of styles, and highlight beers that I enjoy or would want to try. So without further ado, the 2014 DISDads Epcot International Food and Wine Fantasy Beer Flight!

1. Leffe Blonde (Belgium) – Let’s start the day out light. Remember, it’s probably before noon. The notes of honey, clove and coriander accent the light to medium malt body. A refreshing way to start.
2. Sierra Nevada Kellerweis (Craft Beers) – Californian staple Sierra Nevada tries their hand at a classic German Hefeweizen. Notes of banana and clove and bubblegum wrapped in a hazy golden blanket topped by a pillowy white head.
3. Altenmunster Oktoberfest (Germany) – Oktoberfest started the same day as Food and Wine. Coincidence? I think not. Straw yellow with bread, corn and grassy notes. Light and refreshing.
4. New Belgium Snapshot (Hops & Barley) – The makers of Fat Tire bring you this American Wheat Ale. Citrus and yeast notes with a nice malt backbone. Another lawnmower beer here.
5. Cigar City Florida Cracker Belgian White (Farm Fresh) – I would be remiss to not have something from Florida’s own Cigar City Brewing on this list. This is their interpretation of a Belgian Witbier, spicy and citrus notes, yeast and biscuit. Another lighter offering, but one that should pack a more flavorful punch.
6. Dogfish Head Punkin (Craft Beers) – Pumpkin beer is all the rage this time of year, and Delaware’s Dogfish Head Brewery’s Punkin is lights out. This is my personal favorite Pumpkin beer. Spicy and full bodied, nice sweet backbone to round it out.
7. BraufactuM Progusta IPA (Brewer’s Collection) – This is the beer that piqued my interest the most. BraufactuM is a German craft brewery with extremely limited distribution in the US. I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to try such a rarity. Plus, it’s an IPA.
8. Terrapin Rye P. A. (Craft Beers) – We’ll wrap the day up with a Rye Pale Ale from Georgia’s Terrapin Brewery. Citrus and floral notes set against a solid malt backbone, accented by rye malt.

There it is, folks. Remember to pair every other one with a tasty treat, and be sure to hydrate!
